It should only take you a few minutes to get started Multiboxing Diablo III with ISBoxer! This guide will try to point you in the right direction.

Part 1: Before configuring ISBoxer

A full video walkthrough for getting started with Diablo 3, by MiRai.

ISBoxer is going to generate a multiboxing configuration for Inner Space, based on what you set up in the ISBoxer software. Before you can configure ISBoxer, you will need to make sure that Inner Space (installed by ISBoxer) is running in the system notification area (usually next to the clock, where all the icons are).

If Diablo III was auto-detected by Inner Space, it will already be listed in the Inner Space menu, and may have a "Skip Launcher" profile for you to use in ISBoxer. If it is not listed, you will need to select "Add Game" from the Inner Space menu, and point it to the game.

  • To skip the launcher: Locate and select "Diablo III.exe" for the Executable, and in the Parameters box put "-launch" with no quotes.
    • NOTE: To set up a profile for the Public Test Realm (PTR), the Parameters box needs "OnlineService.PTR=true -launch -uid diablo3_ptr_enus" instead of just "-launch" also with no quotes, and the PTR game client is required to use this option (you cannot launch the PTR from the retail game client).
  • To use the launcher: Locate and select "Diablo III Launcher.exe" for the Executable

Important note: This section is titled before configuring ISBoxer because you're not done yet simply by following this section. You cannot launch multiple Diablo 3 instances by selecting your new Game/Game Profile from the Inner Space menu; you MUST select your ISBoxer Character Set, or an ISBoxer Character Set Slot, from the launch menu in order to use ISBoxer and allow Diablo 3 multiboxing. (Diablo 3 will refuse to launch a second instance.) Please continue with the rest of the guide after completing this section...

Part 2: Use the Quick Setup Wizard

This video walks you through everything from adding Diablo 3 to Inner Space and using ISBoxer's Quick Setup Wizard, to collecting phat loot.

ISBoxer's Quick Setup Wizard is really good at providing a starter configuration. The first thing you want to do to set up any new team (or "Character Set" is what ISBoxer calls your team) is go to the Wizards menu and select Quick Setup Wizard. If you can't find the menu for some reason, you can probably find it by tapping Alt, or you can press Ctrl+Q to use the keyboard shortcut for the Quick Setup Wizard.

The Quick Setup Wizard should be fairly painless. Make sure that on the first page of the wizard, in the very first drop-down box, that you tell ISBoxer that you are configuring Diablo 3. As you go through the wizard, you pick a name for your Character Set, name or pick the Characters in it, select a Window Layout style, and set up a CPU Strategy. The only part that might confuse you is selecting a Window Layout, especially if the styles that are automatically listed don't include exactly what you are looking for. However, you can change your Window Layout style at any time by using the Window Layout Wizard or even manually customize it with the Window Layout editor, and you can change your CPU Strategy at any time using the CPU Strategy Wizard. So really, just pick something that will do for now and then adjust things after trying it out.

On the final page of the wizard, it offers to set up some default Key Maps and Click Bars for you. It is highly recommended that you leave the settings default on this page and include the Key Maps, as they provide valuable functionality as well as common examples for you to use and learn from.

After running the Quick Setup Wizard, do an Export to Inner Space. You can find it in the File menu. You will need to do this any time you want to activate changes you have made through ISBoxer.

For now, do not make any changes in your ISBoxer configuration. Try it out first by continuing with the rest of this guide!

Part 3: Log in

After you have Exported to Inner Space, your Character Set should now be available for launching. To launch your team, use one of the following 3 methods:

  1. Right click Inner Space in the system notification area and, in the ISBoxer Character Sets sub-menu, select your Character Set
  2. In the top left pane in ISBoxer, under Character Sets, right click your Character Set and select Launch
  3. To create a shortcut on your desktop to launch your team: In the top left pane in ISBoxer, under Character Sets, right click your Character Set and select Create desktop Launch shortcut

The launch process is usually a little bit different whether you are launching the game via a launcher or not.

When using the game's launcher

Use this section if you are launching the game through the game's launcher.

When you launch your Character Set, one launcher and game instance will be handled at a time. The second account's game launcher will open after the first one has launched the first game instance, and the first launcher has closed. If it takes more than 3 minutes to get from launching the game's launcher to opening the game instance, ISBoxer will give up and not continue launching the next instance. To continue launching, just launch your Character Set again and ISBoxer will continue filling in any missing windows.

In addition, when using the launcher, ensure the correct region is selected (drop-down directly above the "Play button") or else your characters will be missing.

When not using the game's launcher

Use this section if you are bypassing the game's launcher.

When you launch your Character Set, each instance of your game should come up, one after another. The second account's game instance will open after the first one has launched. If it takes more than 3 minutes to get from launching the game's launcher to opening the game instance, ISBoxer will give up and not continue launching the next instance. To continue launching, just launch your Character Set again and ISBoxer will continue filling in any missing windows.

In addition, when not using the launcher, ensure the correct region is selected prior to logging in (accessed through the game options on the login screen) or else your characters will be missing.

When you want to enter your password, you may need to temporarily disable ISBoxer Hotkeys that may otherwise interfere! So, turn off "Key Maps" to enter your password. To do this, use the Shift+Alt+M hotkey, or click on the "A,Z" icon that starts out with green (activated) arrows.

If your password is the same on all accounts, you can enter your password in all windows at the same time via Key broadcasting. To do this, use the Shift+Alt+R hotkey, or click on the "A,A" icon that starts out with gray (deactivated) arrows.

Part 4: Gameplay as a multiboxer

This Diablo 3 basic gameplay video by MiRai demonstrates how to get started actually playing!

At this point, congratulations you are already multiboxing! You have your characters in the game! You can go back and forth between the windows, and play each of them just as if you weren't using ISBoxer. You can stop following the guide and come back later if that's all you want for now.

The most important things you will want to learn how to do in order to enjoy your multiboxing experience are as follows:

  1. How to move your characters together
  2. How to attack the same thing together
  3. How to heal your characters

In Diablo III, because the game has no Auto-Follow feature and requires Click-to-Move (or hold the mouse button to move), Mouse broadcasting is used to move your characters together. To enable broadcasting mode, press Shift+Alt+R (by default) or click the "A,A" icon; when this icon has green arrows, broadcasting is enabled. This method of movement poses similar problems in Diablo III as it would in any game without Auto-Follow—the characters may drift apart or, during combat, it might be more of a sprint than a drift! This leads to the most popular question for Diablo 3 players...

How do I keep my characters in sync?

All we can do is try to mitigate the problem, using clever tricks
  • click and hold the mouse button to move around together. (instead of click, click, click, click, which might end up moving each guy differently)
  • hold space (default binding for "Force Move" in the game's key bindings) to move instead of clicking. It's the same thing, except that it won't interact with things like loot or mobs; this way all of your toons move instead of possibly one or two stopping and the others moving
  • bunch them together most easily by using walls, especially corners.
  • hold shift (default binding for "Force Stand Still" in the game's key bindings) for combat, so your guys don't move around randomly
    • Note: If you're holding Shift and clicking and your characters are not standing still, you may have missed selecting Diablo 3 on the first page of the Quick Setup Wizard. To fix this behavior, enable "Make game believe it is foreground window" in your Character Set.
  • remember to have the same movement speed! (Equipped items and Paragon point allocation can affect this)

How do I re-sync my characters, when they have gotten out of sync?

  • The easiest way is to bunch them together using walls, especially corners!

There are other tricks that can be handy for specific situations:

  1. The Quick Setup Wizard now includes "Hold to Control" hotkeys, which will allow you to easily control any specific window by holding a Hotkey
  2. One simple method is to hold a Hotkey that sends Shift to your other window (or certain other windows, etc) as you move, and then let go again at just the right moment to make him move with you again. This way, the character in your active window may move and the others will remain still, but all will still attack or use other abilities.
  3. You will need to be able to quickly click in each window for this and other reasons (loot, anyone?). One way of doing this is by lining up small, interactive views of all windows via Video FX in order to minimize the amount of time clicking in different windows by reducing the distance you need to move the mouse.
  4. Another method is to temporarily disable broadcasting (e.g. via the Shift+Alt+R default hotkey, or by clicking the "A,A" icon) and run straight through your other character, then re-enable broadcasting at just the right moment to make him move with you again

Part 5: Start customizing

Customizing your multiboxing setup is something that happens gradually over time, as you learn new things or encounter new content that poses new problems.

Remember, to activate changes you made through the ISBoxer program, you will need to Export to Inner Space! Most changes you can make will automatically apply while playing, as soon as you Export.

Setting up custom re-syncing Hotkeys

These custom Hotkeys could come in handy for certain situations. They are just one way to help you get your characters back together.

A Hotkey that sends Mouse1 (left click) to the window of your choice, e.g. to make them move or pick something up without switching screens
  1. In ISBoxer's Wizards menu (Alt+W), select the Mapped Key Wizard
  2. Select a Key Map to place the Hotkey in, and click Next.
    • Note that "Always On" will not be toggled by the Key Maps toggle (thus the name "Always On"), so if you will need to use this Hotkey for things like typing, it is a better idea to select either the Combat or Non-combat Key Maps.
  3. Pick the "Key Re-map" type of Mapped Key from the drop-down, and click Next.
  4. The next page gives the actual options for setting up a Key re-map:
    • Hotkey to re-map: this is the hotkey you will press, for example F1 could be simple and convenient to click in window 1, F2 for window 2, etc
    • Key Combination to send: make this Mouse1!
    • Target for keystrokes: pick the window you want to click at the time you press or hold the Hotkey. Commonly this could be "Window:All w/o Current"
    • Hold broadcasted keys while you hold the hotkey: this box needs to be checked in order for Mouse1 to be held
    • Activate when the Hotkey is _____: this option will be disabled by the Hold option
  5. Click Finish
  6. Don't forget to Export to Inner Space to activate your changes!
A Hotkey you hold that sends Shift to one or more other windows, e.g. to pause their movement so that you can move or loot on the main window without affecting the others
    • Hotkey to re-map: this is the hotkey you will press, for example Mouse4 could be simple and convenient
    • Key Combination to send: make this Shift!
    • Target for keystrokes: pick the window(s) you want to stop moving at the time you hold the Hotkey. Commonly this could be "Window:All w/o Current"
    • Hold broadcasted keys while you hold the hotkey: this box needs to be checked in order for Shift to be held
    • Activate when the Hotkey is _____: this option will be disabled by the Hold option
  5. Click Finish
  6. Don't forget to Export to Inner Space to activate your changes!
A Hotkey that can temporarily disable broadcasting to one or more other windows, e.g. to pause their movement and combat
  3. Pick the "Broadcasting Toggler" type of Mapped Key from the drop-down, and click Next.
  4. The next page gives the actual options for setting up a Broadcasting Toggler:
    • Name your toggle: well? ... name it.
    • Hotkey to activate this toggle: this is the hotkey you will press, for example Mouse4 could be simple and convenient
    • Toggle when the Hotkey is: set this to "pressed OR released" in order to toggle once when the Hotkey is pressed, and once more when released
    • This toggle should turn broadcasting OFF instead of ON: this box needs to be checked, in order to temporarily turn broadcasting OFF instead of ON.
    • Broadcast FROM any of these windows: pick the window(s) you might need to broadcast FROM. Commonly this could be "Window:All w/ Current" (default)
    • Broadcast TO these windows: pick the window(s) you want to stop moving at the time you hold the Hotkey. Commonly this could be "Window:All w/o Current" (default)
    • Block buttons from current window (control ONLY the Target): this box will block buttons from the current window, and only send keystrokes or mouse buttons to the "Broadcast TO" windows, which at that point may or may not include the current window. Otherwise, the current window is never included in the broadcast (because it wasn't blocked and doesn't need a broadcast)
  5. Click Finish
  6. Don't forget to Export to Inner Space to activate your changes!
