Crashing on Loading Screens

Whenever I try to zone my characters to a new area that requires a loading screen, at least one game client usually crashes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Crashes are less common if I stagger them, but there are situations where all of them have to zone at once. I'm playing DAoC if that matters. Here's the error I get:

Code:

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

Loading screen crashes are usually from Antivirus or other such type software. Loading screens are when you are accessing the disk and performing a bunch of I/O, and these are really affected by anything that has pushed a filter driver into the system. AVG and Avast are fairly common culprits.

That said, I would start with a diagnostic. It might be something else. Just grab the diagnostic on an instance of the game running, it doesn't matter whether running under InnerSpace or not.

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

I'm running Windows Defender, so I'll try disabling it while I play. Here's the diagnostic though:

Edit: I'm still getting crashes with antivirus disabled. :(

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

Actually Windows Defender is fairly benign. Definitely not great on the AV ladder either, but if you practice safe surfing and don't open dodgy packages (emails) you can normally get away with it.

On the other hand, I would try removing Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and the Intel Security Assist.
The Intel Security Assist was likely received in the latest round of Windows 10 updates. There are a few questions popping up about it, and conjecture says it seems to be a monitoring program and call home program which will helpfully let you know of any updates you need to your Intel MEI and other stuff. Which seeing as Windows Update is doing that already (that's how you got it in the first place), means it is yet another waste of resources which is sending monitoring data back to yet another entity. Although I can't much on it from Intel, and Intel Security also include the former McAfee so it might be something to do with them and a gateway to the cloud scanning service??? Who knows.

edit: After a bit of looking, it appears that Intel Security Assist may be part of the QuickAssist technologies which offload common tasks from the CPU to the EP80579 or similar. Sadly QuickAssist technologies are limited to specific Xeons, so they are pretty pointless on a standard desktop. On the other hand, this is a bit more conjecture to go with the remaining conjecture, because Intel don't publish anything easy to find on it, and I'm not reading all those whitepapers.

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

Thanks for putting so much time into helping me. I uninstalled those two programs and kept windows defender disabled (just in case), but I'm still crashing. For now, I'll just try to zone them one at a time.

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

Well, there is a bunch of reports on the internet (searching via google) about DAOC crashing when zoning, so it may not be anything to do with InnerSpace. Looking at the stack, the crash is so far down the chain from any InnerSpace method call, that I's guess it is more likely a game issue, than not.

I can see there is a CPU affinity set, but can't tell what is being set there. Perhaps you could try a All Games use All Cores strategy in the CPU Wizard (this is normally the last option on the drop down list).

The only relevant posts I can find in these forums are one guy who had overclocked his PC, but not actually tested it fully so was getting Core crashes, and another one which presumably was corrected by an InnerSpace update, but that was over a year ago.

The internet also says that if you play DAOC, there is a "Smart Memory" bug, which usually happens when not zoning much, and this normally only happens on AMD/ATI cards. One of the optional solutions there is to run an NVidia card. Not very practical I know, but if you happen to have one lying around.

Also there were a couple other things you might consider shutting down on your computer as a test. I didn't mention them up front because they are less likely to be issues.
These are:
Plex Media Server
APC Powerchute

Also. Windows Defender/MSSE, is nice enough that you can set an Exclude Processes on InnerSpace.exe and DAOC (game.dll) and it will leave them alone. Try this.

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

If it happens when zoning together, have you tried using multiple DAOC folders? Typically it is not necessary to have multiple installs, and is also not recommended because it can reduce cache performance, but this would be moderately easy to try. To try it, make a copy of the game folder, then use Add Game from Inner Space to add the new .exe to Inner Space with a new Game Profile. Then back in ISBoxer, in the top left pane under Characters select one to switch to the new Game/Game PRofile; the option will then be in the bottom right, with the Game box matching what you entered in the Add Game window.

Re: Crashing on Loading Screens

I made a copy for every 2 characters (4 folders total) and I haven't had a crash since. Woohoo! Thanks to both of you for helping me solve this.
