Is it possible just to use the screen merging feature?

Yes. You should still run the Quick Setup Wizard to make a Character Set. At the end (I think it is the last screen) uncheck the box to set up the default Key Maps. If there is anything left that you want to turn off that should be possible too if you can give details of what it is.

In the next version of ISBoxer (ISBoxer 41, currently in open beta) there will be further support for this in the "Bare" configuration style. which only sets up a Window Layout and Virtual Files for a Character Set.
