Virtually confused about virtual files

I am confused, and probably missing something basic.

I have a setup with character 1, character 2, character 3, and character 4
I have another setup with character11, character21, character31, and character41

So I have 8 virtual files:
core_public__-character1.yaml
core_public__-character2.yaml
core_public__-character3.yaml
core_public__-character4.yaml

core_public__-character11.yaml
core_public__-character21.yaml
core_public__-character31.yaml
core_public__-character41.yaml

If I launch setup1 and set up all the windows the way I want them, then launch setup2 and set those windows, setup 1 gets all messed up.

What am I missing?

Do I need to create an eve folder for each setup? Am I just missing something basic with virtual files?

Possibly just that the window positionings are not stored in core_public__.dat. According to http://www.dual-boxing.com/threads/45822-Cloning-window-positions-to-other-chars-in-EVE they are kept in core_user__.dat.

Otherwise it seems that we might need to clear up terminology for you in this case, because as you have stated it, I have to assume that you literally created 8 "Virtual Files" and now you have "core_public__-character1.yaml" listed under Virtual Files above "core_public__-character2.yaml" and the others. If this is the case, then your Virtual Files are not being used, because there is nothing to connect it to the actual file that EVE is using, which is core_public__.dat. The fix, in this case, would be to clear out your custom-made Virtual Files, and use the Virtual File Wizard to apply the correct Virtual File (just one "Virtual File" called "core_public__.dat") automatically to your characters...

Re: Virtually confused about virtual files

No, I have 1 file defined in the ISBoxer console, so it is creating 1 file for each character, as intended.

It seems that there are settings for the core_public__.yaml to virtualize the core_public__.dat file when eve launches.

Is there then an ability to virtualize the core_char__.dat as well, so that different Character Sets can be set up differently without having to have a different game install for each Character Set? I am not sure of the mechanism that is used to create and use the virtual file behind the scenes of ISBoxer.

I found this online and it clears up a lot:
http://eveill.blogspot.com/2013/03/profile-maintenance-and-files.html

Profile Folder

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Local\CCP\EVE
Windows Vista/7: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE
MacOS X*: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/EVE Online/p_drive/Application Data/CCP/EVE

Browser Folder: Used to store in-game bookmarks and IGB (un)trusted site lists
core_char_*: Character setting files (this is where the UI settings are stored for a specific character)
core_user_*: User specific settings (this is where the account settings are stored)
core_public_*: Front page advert links, and settings (also sound and video resolution settings for this installation)
prefs: Basic client settings, and local machine settings (basically generic information for eve client. No settings you would care about)

Indeed you are correct, that the core_char_ files are where the window settings are stored.

I believe that I saw somewhere where I can run a program before launching the Character set. In this case I would be able to keep all my settings in sub folders, and write an app to delete all the core_char__.dat files in the root, and copy the desired files for that set to the root of the folder. Thereby allowing custom windows settings in game per character set.

I guess I was wondering if it is something that ISBoxer can handle or a hack around would be the best way to go.

Re: Virtually confused about virtual files

The Virtual File documentation explains it ;)

Right click on Virtual Files and select "New Virtual File". Name it, exactly, "core_user__.dat" (assuming that's the right original filename). Then highlight it so you see an empty Characters list in the bottom pane. Drag (without selecting first) Characters from the top left pane to the bottom left pane. They will automatically get assigned a new filename, which you can configure by highlighting each Character in the bottom left pane.

Re: Virtually confused about virtual files

Ok, it isn't that easy. Not really. But it is.

As referenced above, each character has a unique ID assigned by Eve at creation. So if I have a character whose number is 123456. Once I log him in, there is a file: core_char_123456.dat

Now I need to copy that file that was created by Eve and name it the virtual file name that I setup: core_char__.dat.
Then in ISBoxer, add all the characters to the virtual file, and I have all my characters setup with all my primary settings and windows in the same location. When I launch different setups, it copies that core_char__.dat as needed.

I can now have a different GUI setup for each character listed under characters, even if there are a couple different listings for each character. ie pvpCharacter1, minerCharacter1, missionCharacter1, etc. The best part is that windows get screwed up or out of sync, I can now just delete the virtual version of the file, load the game and move all the windows around at once with broadcasting, to get the set up properly again.

One thing that I would really like to see is an option to lock the virtual file. So that no matter how I mess with, or more like mess up the settings while in game, the next time I launch the game, the settings are back to the way they were before I broke it. I can accomplish that with a bat file, but.....

Re: Virtually confused about virtual files

So I can't get to seem this working, and I have the feeling it's like the stupidest thing.
So I made core_char__.dat as a virtual file, then just added my characters (on which I want window layout copied)
As soon in this screenshot. However it's not working.
Image

Also tried it with the core_char_[CHARID].dat and virtualize that to the other characters (with ids replaced to match their own)
But also not working, so I'm wondering what I am doing wrong here?
