How Do I Make a No-Swapping Layout?

I'm running some 2-man teams now and I have 2 monitors. I'd like to have a layout that puts slot 1 in monitor 1 (2560x1600) and slot 2 in monitor 2 (1920x1200), and without any swapping being able to click in either monitor.

I see the top 2 "no swapping" choices in the wizard, but they are lying! Not only that, the slot that ends up on monitor 2 is being rendered at a bad resolution and then being scaled, so it has funky text. It seems like with 2 monitors, 2 toons and never swapping they should both be rendered at the native resolution for each monitor.

Is that possible? Or am I going about it wrong? Would I be better off with a stacked layout and filling the entire other monitor with a videofx window? It seems to me that I would end up with funky text again, as opposed to rendering to both monitors at the native resolution and never swapping.

Re: How Do I Make a No-Swapping Layout?

You're picking the correct Window Layout, and by no swapping it literally means that they do not swap.

What you are asking to disable is the Insant Swapping option in your Window Layout, which syncs the resolutions. This is separate from the actual swapping behavior. During the Quick Setup Wizard or Window Layout Wizard, you can set the "Instant Swapping" option to "False" to have it set to false after finishing the wizard. To change your existing Window Layout, just select it in the top left pane under Window Layouts, and then un-check the Instant Swapping box. Export to Inner Space after.

Whether you use dxNothing or not, and you scale the game to a different Aspect Ratio than it's rendering in (as it sounds like you're doing now) it is going to look bad, yes.

Just a reminder, though. Because you don't have the same resolution or aspect ratio, mouse broadcasting will be less than ideal.

(I would probably recommend making both windows the same size. I should update the wizard to include that.)

Re: How Do I Make a No-Swapping Layout?

Actually, it was the "Swap Hot Character to main region" setting to "never" that got the behavior I was looking for. That makes the toon in display 2 to stay on display 2 and not to move to display 1 when I click on it.

When I deselected "Use Instant window swapping" the text got looking a lot better, but as you pointed out, x-y positions are *way* off without the synchronization. With Swap Hot Character to never and Instant window swapping enabled, the text is pretty rough. I think I'll take your advice and set both windows to 1920x1200. That will leave some room on the big monitor, but will make sharp pictures on both.

Thanks for pointing me to the right section of the Window Layout dialog. I would have been stuck in "regions" forever. :)

Edit: Yup, that was it. The only problem is that 1920x1200 is quite a bit smaller on the 30" monitor than it is on the 27" monitor. I guess now I'll have to swap the displays so that the main monitor is the older 1920x1200 max resolution monitor.

Re: How Do I Make a No-Swapping Layout?

Fixes for you:
Code:
ISBoxer 41.7.0325.1
    * Window Layout Wizard:
       o Added a style similar to 'Full Screen per Character' which follows Maintain Aspect Ratio
       o Fixed a bug where setting up 'Full Screen per Character' with Swapping disabled would actually end up with Swapping enabled
    * A 64-bit version of dxNothing is now included, and will install to the InnerSpace\x64 folder

Update via Help->About.

The new "One Screen per Character" style will automatically match to the main screen. To select what the Window Layout considers to be the main screen during the wizard (as noted at the bottom of the Window Layout Wizard wiki page):
Which monitor is used as the "main" monitor can be controlled via the "Use monitors" setting. Select the "Use monitors" option, then to the right of it a "..." button will appear. This will bring up a window that allows you to make changes to how the wizard uses your monitors. The list in the left will correspond to the Swap Groups setting. Move the display you want as the "main" to the top of the list, click OK, and browse the updated styles.
