Make frequent backups.
It is easy to restore to a previous backup, but sometimes hard to undo a mistake that you're not even sure what it was.
Take your working config, back it up, play around with it.
If you like the changes, make another backup of the new one.
At any point, you can restore to any of your previous versions...
