New user trying to get ISBoxer working with DDO

Hi,

I've been trying to multibox (or better, multi-instance) DDO for a while now, and I'm also trying to get it working with ISBoxer.

The game is running smoothly without IS, and I have set the following options:

Graphics quality: very low
Graphics hardware level: DX9
Maximum frame rate: 30
Engine speed: very low
Connection speed: 64.0

With those settings, it is pretty much possible to run 4 instances with DDO-ML, a community provided multiclient launcher. Still, I would prefer to use ISBoxer due to the additional options I would have.

Sadly enough, the game client keeps crashing after server selection and login.

Any ideas, anyone?

Any help would be really appreciated.

TIA,
LXP

Re: New user trying to get ISBoxer working with DDO

Do you get a crash report box with technical details you can share? If not we're kinda left guessing, but we can go from there...

Without an error message, to get diagnostic information you may need to check the Windows Event Log. Open up the Windows Control Panel and in the search box type in "event" (with no quotes). It should show a "View event logs" option under Administrative Tools. Click that to open the Event Viewer. In the left pane there is a "Windows Logs" category, expand that and select "Application" under it -- this is different than the "Applications and Services Logs". Selecting "Application" will bring up a history of application crashes, and you should see an entry for each of your game crashes. They will show up as "Error" under Level, the Date and Time will match the crash time, Source should say "lotroclient". If you don't see one that says lotroclient or at least something lotro related, stop there because the other entries in the error log are not useful for this. If you DO see it, select it there in the list, and then at the bottom click the Details tab. Click XML View, select all of it, and paste me the details.

It may also help to get me "Diagnostics for game crashes" from ISBoxer's Help menu. http://isboxer.com/wiki/Diagnostics
It says to get it from a game instance that is NOT launched by ISBoxer. It sounds like your launcher is working fine but then the game client crashes as it starts, so it may not be possible to get these diagnostics from the game client itself when launched via ISBoxer, so launch it normally for this

Hey lax,

thanks a lot for your assistance.

Not much of a crash report box, even less technical details. Also, I'm german and thus run a german OS, so I assume a screenshot wouldn't be much help. What the tiny message window that comes up say is basically (my translation):

dndclient does not work any more.
The program cannot be executed properly due to a problem. The program will be terminated and you will be notified once a solution will be available.

Btw, the client now goes by the filename 'dndclient.exe'.

There you go:

Hmmm, that might not be possible as well, as it simply doesn't crash when launched normally. I will try to get a diagnostic through ISBoxer first.

Yup, that worked. Here's the output:

Ok, here's some additional information that might help. Since a while, the launcher is 'turbinelauncher.exe' and the client 'dndclient.exe' - I don't know since which update though, but it's quite a while.

As is it's definetely dndclient.exe that is crashing, it's the client, not the launcher. And it seems possible to start only the official client, as that is what DDO-ML does. I also tried to specify the client as the game executable in IS, but that gave me nothing but another crash and a message saying dndclient had been started with an incorrect parameter. To give you an impression about that, here's an excerpt from DDO-ML's log:

Code:
2014-06-16 18:31:55 : ddolauncher.exe -s sarlona -g "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Turbine\\Dungeons & Dragons Online" -u "<game account name here>" -a "<password here>" -z ""

'ddolauncher.exe' seems NOT to be a turbine official executable, but apparently it is something provided by DDO-ML. I will try using this as launcher for ISBoxer, but I'm not very confident it won't cause too much additional hassle.

Re: New user trying to get ISBoxer working with DDO

It appears (I could be wrong, here) that your video driver supporting NVIDIA Optimus may be out of date. This problem is somewhat common when someone gets an Optimus-enabled laptop (this switches between the Intel GPU and NVIDIA GPU for power saving) and keeps the factory-installed drivers. If you can go to nvidia.com and check for a driver update, that could solve the issue.

If that doesn't help, here's a mildly random smattering of ideas.

Graphics hardware level: DX9

That may be but the game is using DirectX 11 (the "hardware level" is just indicating to DirectX 11 the features used/supported from your hardware). You can try setting it to using the DirectX 9 graphics API instead of the DirectX 11 API.

You can also try shutting down TeamViewer, as well as SUPERAntiSpyware.

Finally, you can also try disabling the "high DPI aware" option on dndclient.exe. I don't think this is the problem, but if all else fails this is easy to try. You may be able to find this option in the Compatibility tab when checking the Properties on dndclient.exe. Otherwise, open up regedit.exe (press Windows+R to bring up the Run Program box, type in regedit.exe, click OK), navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers, and delete the entry for C:\Program Files (x86)\Turbine\Dungeons & Dragons Online\dndclient.exe

Okay, I don't really think the driver is the issue, as I updated to the latest one just a few days ago. What made the driver appear out of date?

Well, the graphics hardware level I mentioned above in fact is the setting in the game's client, so naturally I was assuming that setting would specify the API version to use. Do you have any indication that my running client was using DX11 instead of DX9 as I had specified? And if yes, how else would I set the game to use the DX9 API?

I will try those if all else fails. Are there any known problems with TeamViewer or SAS?

I never heard of that 'high DPI aware' option, what does it do?

Thanks,

Btw, the client now goes by the filename 'dndclient.exe'.

Hthyhm & tia,

LXP, I have been using ISBoxer to multi-box DDO for years and still do. Just the benefit alone of being able to run the Foreground client at 30+ FPS and throttle the background to 3-5fps is worth it but obviously there is so much more...

It has been a long time since I had to tinker with my setups but I remember having to scour the LotR forums to get close and then Lax did a few fixes for DDO and we were off to the races...

In my configuration I have the following and recommend you try for your DDO Default Profile:

-Main Executable Filename: TurbineInvoker.exe;
-Main Executable Parameters: NULL;
-Main Executable Path: <your path here>;
-Launch without fields: All Blank;
-Monitor selection: Application Controlled;
-Force Windowed : NOT checked;
-Pre-Startup: Empty;
-Startup: Empty;

For some reason I vaguely remember that Lax's code handled fine the startup of the TurbineLauncher and takes over the dndclient when they launch and renames them to to ID each character/position in your set of characters... Maybe that isn't what is happening but that is the way I remember it...

If that doesn't work then I recommend you uninstall the 'DDO-ML' and try without it interfeing though that may be possible... I see it up in the list of programs and likely they are both not compatible...

That or maybe pick a new directory to download a vanilla DDO client to and do a fresh install to that directory and point ISBoxer to the TurbineInvoiker in the fresh install... If you go that route do the standard resolution client first and make sure it is set to DX9... Even if the German version doesn't use TurbineLauncher like mine does I would still get a fresh install to point to...

Before ISBoxer in the old old days I had 4 copies of DDO on my machine and ran each from it's own directory fine (but obviously without the benefits of ISBoxer) so having 2 on your machine should not be a problem...

Please let us now how it turns out. If you get it working and want more info I can give you more information as to what I do with DDO in ISBoxer...

Thanks for your assistance too, nodoze. Is there any particular reason why you use TurbineInvoker and not TurbineLauncher?

Will try a second, fresh installation, indeed, and let you guys know what comes up.

No I don't remember exactly why but it works for me. I remember doing a bunch of research and hitting the LotR forums and ended up with this config which I have used on multiple PCs.
