Change variable keystrokes on fly?

Hello,

Is there a way to change or create a keymap to change variable keystrokes on the fly? Particularly I am looking for a way to toggle between two different sets of "Which F key targets which group member".

While I suppose this could happen in other games, the reason why I want to do so is the way EQ handles mercenaries. For those that don't know, EQ lets you hire mercenaries which are "NPC group members" and therefore take up a slot. They can be summoned and dismissed at will but they cost in game monies every 15min while active.

So when I'm in "run around do boring crap mode" these guys are put up and my variable keystroke keys would need to be set for a 3 man group. With them out, I need variable keys for 6 man group. Because of how they work, the group order and therefore targeting order is the same for each scenario.

I am currently dealing this with the in game menu (ctrl + alt + shift + g), but that is very tedious. I think I need variable variable keystrokes  I am using mouse button 4 as a modifier key to send keys to other windows. If I could have like shift+mouse4 or something make the variable keys have a different targeting, that should fit the bill.

Any suggestions on how to do something like this or maybe some other work around?

Thanks,
Cdaug

Re: Change variable keystrokes on fly?

What you're looking for is a Set Variable Keystroke Action and it's at the bottom of the "Keystroke Actions" sub-menu when adding an Action to a Mapped Key. :)

Re: Change variable keystrokes on fly?

Another option to consider is just to have 2 different Character Sets and switch between them. I assume in one case you only have 3 EQ game windows and in the other you have 6, so different Character Sets will also allow you to have different Window Layouts in these situations. Or do you run two groups with 3 characters and 3 mercs in each? Still, different Character Sets might be the solution you are looking for.

Note that in EQ you should not need to log out to change Character Sets; just re-launch the Character Set through Inner Space.

Re: Change variable keystrokes on fly?

So am I correct in this thinking:

Code:
Create a new mapkey (I'll call it NoMercFollowMe) - set to pressed or released

Assign hotkey to it

Add first step with 7 actions: /* Targeting same slot is always F1 so no change needed */
      action 1 - slot 1 target slot 2 F2
      action 2 - slot 1 target slot 3 F3
      action 3 - slot 2 target slot 1 F2
      action 4 - slot 2 target slot 3 F3
      action 5 - slot 3 target slot 2 F2
      action 6 - slot 3 target slot 1 F3
      action 7 - TARGET slot{SLOT} all others
Add second step
action 1 -  Follow target all other

Then modify normal "Follow Me" keymap with actions 1 - 6 above to set it to "merc mode"

Is my understanding correct? This seems to work..would there be any negative implications to having to having so many actions to one step?
