Graficcard / Monitor perfomance Question

hey everybody,

i have a performance question about how to handle 16 Clients on 4 Screen.

The base are 4 Monitors powered by 2 GTX680TI, and my setup is working rly nicely
Currently i have setup where the clients are distributed on the Monitors and in the game the specific graficcard is selsected for the Client for that screen its shown on.

SLI is disabled.

But actually i dont need to view all the clients so i asked myself would it be a performance deterioration when i put them all fullsize stacked behind each other on one Screen with SLI enabled on that Monitor
Im not sure what performance it cost to resize all the clients like it is in the current setup. And im not sure if all the grafic load is distributed to all graficcards equally (cuz not all screens have the same amount of clients ATM).

if someone with more knowledge then me could help me about that would be great

thanks!

You can use Open Hardware Monitor to determine how well the load is split between your GPUs. Info here: http://isboxer.com/wiki/HOWTO:Tweak_your_framerate#Identifying_framerate_bottlenecks

But actually i dont need to view all the clients so i asked myself would it be a performance deterioration when i put them all fullsize stacked behind each other on one Screen with SLI enabled on that Monitor.

The resizing isn't the performance cost, it's the full size rendering that costs you. If you have 12 small windows that are still rendering 1920x1080 you're paying the performance cost of 12 windows rendering 1920x1080. If those same windows were the full size instead of scaled down, you would expect almost exactly the same performance.

Another thing to keep in mind with SLI is that the on-board RAM needs to be mirrored, so you'd effectively be losing some of your RAM by switching to this mode. That could be relevant depending on how much you're using, since if you run out it's going to hurt your performance a lot.

Other than that the only person that can really answer this question is you, by trying it and observing the difference. You can use OHM as described above (see link) in order to get the quantified answer.

I run a 10box setup on a GTX 590 and 3 screens and I noticed that doing anything other than my games was lagging quite badly so as an experiment I switched SLI on (Which disables the third screen sadly) and I noticed a HUGE performance boost in game and out of game. So depending on your GPUs you may need to disable a screen or two for SLI to work. I'd keep that in mind.

Like lax said, however, depending on how much Vram you have this may not be an option especially as you are running 16. I would say experiment with it. Make a new window layout set up in this manner and if it doesn't work as you'd like you can always just switch back to your original layout.

The benefit to having a stacked window layout is the ability to use a larger DXNothing workspace for your overviews and such.

Re: Graficcard / Monitor perfomance Question

hello,

thanks for your suggestions. I made a test setup with all stacked and i have at least the subjective impression that it runs faster :D :D

the numbers from the tool lax posted tell me the following

both GPUs running at 50-60% load (2x GTX 660Ti) in SLI
the CPUs running at 20-40% load (AMD FX 8350)
and the Momory ist at 17,5gb in use (32gb)

looking ok for me and im happy with the new setup so thank u all
