New to Boxing, looking for good class duo

Hey folks, haven't played since 2002 and at the suggestion of a friend since we both suffer from very inconsistent play times, he told me to try boxing. At first I didn't want to because I always thought it was looked down upon, but after seeing so many in EQ, I was surprised. So I'm deciding to try it out. Just going to dual box for now, maybe 3 once I get the hang of it, but I'll start small.

I've always enjoyed soloing as much as I can in MMO's until max level. That way I can play at my own pace. I also like to see as much of the content as I can while leveling. What setup would work best for this? I usually like pet classes to be honest and thought about making one of my duo's a nec/mage or mage/mage, whichever would be stronger, but I'm more concerned about being as self sufficient as I can, and like I said, at the same time being able to solo dungeons, if that is possible.

What dual box, class setup would work best for this? On a side note, also which would be stroner, a mage/nec or mage/mage? This would be an alt box since i just like pets.

Thanks ahead of time.

I am not a pro EQ-boxer, and I quit in 2001, so this advice will only do you any good if you're playing on Ragefire (the new Timelocked Progression Server)

Currently, on Ragefire, SOE/DB failed to make things as "Classic" as some might have thought, the most noticeable being the strength of Pets and Hand-to-Hand damage.

Mage Pets are OP. This combine with better Mana Regen than Classic makes Mages the OP Leveling/Farming Class. Mage/Mage is probably the easiest Duo you can imagine.

Hand-to-Hand damage tables FOR MELEE CLASSES were improved since Classic era, and were not reverted on Ragefire. With the weapons available currently on Ragefire, NOTHING outdoes Bare-Fisted Combat for Melee Classes that can Dual-Wield. This obviously makes Monks the top DPS. It's actually really sad, as there is almost no use for weapons for some classes. This isn't entirely true, as Augmentations (obviously not Classic) are on Ragefire, can only be applied to weapons and can really increase DPS.

H2H ratios are tied to Skill and so Monks will be able attain higher potential than others. At level 1, H2H ratio is 5/37 and increases about ever 5 levels, up to 20/26 at 50 for non-monks. Monks, with their Epic, can get 22/20 Fists at 50.

Having said that, if you don't want to do Mage/Mage, Monk/SHM is good (any melee + SHM is good). ENC/DRU is good for Charming. There are a lot of good combos available for Duoing. Coming up with a combo basically revolves around deciding if you can completely mitigate damage to your toons, in which case you don't need a healer, or choosing a Healer + something to DPS with.

Awesome, thanks for that. I hadn't realized that some things were left as they are on live and not completely reverted back to how they were at the very beginning. I did end up trying out a few different duo's. I tried Mage/Mage, Nec/Mage, SK/SHam and Druid/Monk. So far I liked Nec/Mage the most. I'm also doing a Monk/druid as an alt duo and that is pretty fun so far.
