Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

Hi there Lax, I didn't see a specific troubleshooting forum so I hope posting this here is OK.

I am only able to launch my team using version 5039. I've been doing this for a while now, hoping one of the new releases will fix the problem. But every time I patch Inner Space with the latest version, it goes back to not launching WoW again. So I reapply the old version and go back to waiting.

Symptoms: when launching the team, the cursor becomes an hour glass as if something is happening, then it returns to normal, but no WoW windows launch. Basically, nothing happens and there is no error message. This can be done over and over again with the same effect. (I.e. it isn't random or occasional.) If I take an older version of Inner Space and overwrite the directory, double clicking the team icon launches the team and I'm back in business.

I've used Process Monitor from Sysinternals to watch what is happening, hoping to catch whatever is going wrong in action, but I don't see anything that is interfering or stopping Inner Space. It's almost like it is giving up and stopping itself, which is weird. Or I'm missing the relevant event somewhere.

The problem with using the older version is that it isn't exactly bug free. :) I can tolerate it, but eventually I'd like to be able to use the latest version with all the latest features.

Let me know if you need any further information. Thanks for any help you can give. Hopefully this is a known problem that I haven't found yet in my internet searches.

(Edited to correct the version number.)

Re: Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

Oh, right, forgot to mention: I have tried all the previous versions that I have found linked in the forums after 5039, but they all do the same thing too. At home I've got a list of the ones I tried, which I can list here when I get back.

Grab Hijack This! from the above link, run it, there's a big button at the top that says Perform a scan and save a log, the button is selected by default. Click that, it will take like 2-5 seconds and bring up a log in notepad. Paste that here for me, or send it to me in email to lax@lavishsoft.com

Re: Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

Thanks for the reply. I'll do that when I get a chance. I just got home, and I checked what previous version I am using. I am using "Lavish.InnerSpace.5039.zip".

Re: Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

OK, I figured it out and am now running the latest version of Inner Space. Thanks to Lax for helping me to think about this differently, which lead me to figure it out on my own. I am a coder myself, so I know that you don't need more nonsense to deal with.

I found that ThreatFire was blocking Inner Space somehow. (ThreatFire is a module that is included with PC Tool's Spyware Doctor software.) This is the second time I've found Threatfire interfering with a legitimate process that I am trying to run without telling me. And that's the worst part--it doesn't bother to mention that it is doing it.

I was lead to this conclusion by the following Windows Event Viewer Application Log entry:

Faulting application name: WoW.exe, version: 3.3.5.12340, time stamp: 0x4c2452fe
Faulting module name: TfWah.dll_unloaded, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4b6725dc
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x04eef510
Faulting process id: 0x1344
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb666befba6880
Faulting application path: c:\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
Faulting module path: TfWah.dll

I determined that "TfWah.dll" was a ThreatFire file, which means that ThreatFire was blocking InnerSpace.exe from executing the WoW.exe process somehow. So I updated Inner Space, disabled Spyware Doctor (which disabled ThreatFire), and tried running my team. Bingo. Inner Space began opening the team windows as intended. After the team windows were opened, I re-enabled Spyware Doctor and scanned the processes to see it it would try to kill WoW.exe or InnerSpace.exe, but it didn't. So Spyware Doctor (via its ThreatFire module) only interferes with Inner Space during the execution of the WoW.exe process, but not after.

So for the users who are running Spyware Doctor, you must either turn off Spyware Doctor temporarily, or disable ThreatFire temporarily, before using Inner Space to start your team. It doesn't bother Inner Space otherwise. It just thinks that Inner Space is doing something that it shouldn't, but doesn't bother to alert the user.

Re: Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

Thanks for posting back with details, I've made a quick change to the dev build (5308 or later) that may or may not correct the issue with the ThreatFire feature of Spyware Doctor -- it's possible that Inner Space is making it crash, and this change may fix that. If you want to give this build a try, right click IS and select Patcher, check "Download development (test) patches" then close and restart IS.

Re: Inner Space Won't Launch WoW

OK, I'll give it a shot now.

Opened Inner Space Patcher, checked "download development (test) patches" and "always patch at startup", shut down the Inner Space process, then started it again. It patched itself to:

  • Inner Space v1.11 (Build 5308)
      ISXDK v32
  • LavishScript v1.96
      LSModule v19
  • LavishGUI v0.72
      LavishGUI API v11

Tried running the team, but no go. Same TfWah.dll interference in the Windows Event Log. Let me know if I screwed up the patching and didn't get the right versions somehow.

If you can't code your way around whatever ThreatFire is doing, don't feel bad--Sandboxie's developers couldn't do it either (the last time I checked). I can deal with disabling and re-enabling Spyware Doctor once a day--having an SSD really helps with stupid stuff like this. I'm tempted to dump Spyware Doctor and find something else, if it weren't for the fact that it has protected me better than Symantec Antivirus (which I have found to be easily defeated by retroviruses, probably due to its popularity making it a huge target).
