You should get a video card with 2GB or more. It doesn't necessarily need to be a $400 3GB model but 1GB is clearly not enough to run 4 D3's at the given resolution and quality, and it seems to be a problem.
In this case I would not recommend an SSD as a performance upgrade. An SSD will improve load times, but will not help in the case where VRAM spills into system RAM, unless you also run out of system RAM (because then it spills to storage which is your HDD or SSD).
In this case your performance hit appears to be from running out of VRAM and having to store additional resources in system RAM instead. The best fix is to not run out of VRAM, which you can also potentially do by loading fewer or lower quality textures, loading lower resolutions, or of course fewer instances... but otherwise by replacing your video card with one that has more onboard RAM. You can also potentially run faster system RAM, but I would expect only a marginal improvement here.
