Lag spikes because of Google Chrome

I've been suffering from random lag spikes for several months now, unrelated to the game I was playing which I finally tracked down to a nasty little program installed with Google Chrome called Google Update. Google Update runs at random times to check if there is an updated version of Chrome available, and if so, downloads it. It doesn't matter if Chrome is running or not, Update will start up automatically.

You can't disable Google Update.
You can't uninstall it.
You can't even set acceptable times for it to check for updates.
The only way to remove it is to uninstall Chrome (and possibly Google World too)

After removing it from all my systems (I can't explain why it was on my HTPC), I haven't had any issues with lag spikes.
