windows 8

Hello all,

I been boxing games fore ever but looking into buying a new laptop and come across a few topics that almost all gamers hate widows 8

I have 3 new alienware laptops and was going to try out the Asus G750Jw but everywhere I look it only comes with windows 8.
The question is for all the boxers that have windows 8 is it as bad as everyone says it is?

thanks

Re: windows 8

Yes. Just spent an entire evening setting up a new PC for a family member and it came with Win 8.

What a disaster that OS is - apparently MS couldn't make up its mind what Win 8 should 'feel' like.

I ended up downloading this: http://lee-soft.com/vistart/

Now at least the Start Menu is back. The wierd side-popping 'charm' screen has to be turned off to keep it from interferening with things, but for the most part, you can work around it.

If you have an old copy of Win 7, then just install over it if you can't deal with Win 8. Otherwise, Win 8 is faster, just more confusing...

Re: windows 8

I don't have any major gripes with Windows 8. I have it installed on one of my desktops and one laptop; my laptop is actually running Windows 8.1 preview, which is of course marginally better. I generally avoid the "Metro" interface and I don't really make use of the Start menu these days anyway, with the ability to pin things to the taskbar and stuff like Steam and Inner Space residing in the system tray for launching games. I've actually used about 0% of the Metro interface, haven't visited the Windows App Store thing and don't really plan to. I click the "Desktop" button and ignore the shit out of Metro.

Aside from the Start menu thing I don't hear too many complaints about Windows 8... actually there are a bunch of nice improvements to the normal interface.

Re: windows 8

I recently switched back to Windows 7 after running Windows 8 for a long time. I had some issues with the 8.1 pre-release and decided to go back to Windows and just be done with it.

After about a week of Windows 7 I missed Windows 8 a lot. There are enough small things with the shell that I like that it worth it to me to be on 8. Things like the new file copy window that allows multiple file copies in the same window, the new task manager, and the addition of the taskbar on each monitor instead of just the main one. Faster boot times are also nice.

I tend to pin apps to the taskbar, or create additional toolbars; so i could care less about the start menu. I almost never use the metro environment.

I despise Windows 8. It's a computer not a GD iPhone. I'm buying a copy of 7 and wiping this godawful POS.

Re: windows 8

Not sure why Windows 8 gets so much hate.

One button switches between Metro and Desktop anyways, and once you learn how to use Metro it is awesome. 1000x better than the start menu.
Anyways, I think most people don't like it because they read on the internet that 'someone else' doesn't like it and they made up there mind before they tried it. Happens with every new MS release usually.

Personally I find it faster & more stable than Win7, and once you learn Metro you will love it, it really is superior to that useless start menu.

Give it a try, win 8.1 is out now and it's really good, i run it on all my machines now. My only prob was by default the OS drive didn't have full permissions, but its an easy enough fix.

And besides, MS has said they are keeping Metro, so unless you want to stay in the dark ages you have no choice. Might as well switch now, or learn UNIX.

ya 8.1 pre was a little buggy. 8.1 RC is solid as a rock, as is Server 2012. I'm like you, i pin what i need to the taskbar, and only use metro to search for something.
