I have a set with 5 actual characters and 2 dxnothing slots (for corner layout). However, when setting up a window layout, it only lets me choose between 5 slots. If I look at an existing layout that already works, Region 6 is set to Slot 6, but there's no Slot 6 in the dropdown so I have no idea how it got there?

For custom layouts, you need to make sure your DXNothings are set to a type of Other.



The DXNothing option is for Wizard generated window layouts, and hides the slots that DXNothings are in from the Window Layout editor, of they are using the DXnothing type.
