Crashing upon launching

Hi all,

Currently using the trial, if this works its a pretty safe bet I will buy a sub. The problem I am having is when launching one of the character profiles from Innerspace, I see the D3 logo for about 2 seconds, it disappears and immediately I see the standard Blizzard Crash window come up. Ive searched the forums and someone mentioned disabling Comodo firewall, which I did - to no avail. I also tried making separate shortcuts through ISboxer to the character profiles on my desktop, and that also yields the same result. I know this will probably sound cliche - but I usually dont have problems running software on my PC. I read the wiki regarding the diagnostic procedure so here is a link to a pastebin of that log. Its at: http://pastebin.com/SK3y82Wa. I will also copy/paste the log in this post as well. If anyone has any idea what I am doing wrong, please let me know. I followed the instructions of Anthony Evans (a D3 streamer, who was playing 4 WD's at once) over at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsw88DmjwP4. It seemed pretty straight forward and I followed it pretty much verbatim. So I don't know what I did/didn't do wrong. :( Any help would be immediately appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Crashing upon launching

Your issue is more than likely 1 of the following as they are hooking in the game.
  • Comodo
  • Zemana Anti Logger
  • Faststone Capture
Shut them down, and they still may be hooking the game for reasons outlined in this article from MS.

So, seeing as you have already tried disabling Comodo you may need to uninstall it for it to not actually interfere. But you might want to try shutting down Zemana and Faststone first. Zemana is one I'm not aware of previously, so it may also have the same result of leaving a filter driver, even when disabled/shut down, so it may also be one you would need to uninstall.

After that, I would also remove
  • Bitdefender
  • SeriousBit.netBalancer

Re: Crashing upon launching

So let me get this straight... In order for this program to work you want me to shut down the following programs:

Zemana Anti Logger: ant-keylogging software
Comodo Firewall: Software that prevents network intrusion.
Bitdefender Anti-virus: Pretty self-explanatory.

In the 17 years of playing games and MMO's ive NEVER had to shut any of those down for a 3rd party software to work. I appreciate the help, but any program that requires me to completely shut down all of my protection software, leaving me wide open - just to be able to run, is a program that I think I will pass on. Never mind my OP. If this is what it takes in order for me to be able to multibox efficiently I think I will just deal with alt+tabbing. Thanks for your replay any way. Be safe.

Re: Crashing upon launching

It is more a case of finding out which of the items in question is not letting it launch. Once you know which one, then the others can go back. it's pretty much a standard diagnosis process, which I have employed many times in my job for over 20 years of managing enterprise systems.

Most standard firewalls on a router will protect you from intrusions to your network, unless you happen to know that the model/firmware you are using has been compromised, or you have deliberately opened up holes in it. Windows in built firewall will also take over if you uninstall Comodo.
Antivirus is only necessary if you happen to be clicking and opening dodgy emails, visiting dodgy websites, plugging in devices (flash drives), etc, WHILE you are testing your team launch. It has a limited window of opportunity. Computers virus's don't just attack out of the blue for no reason, except for maybe a worm, but a firewall should prevent that (including a standard home router).
Anti Key Loggers are pointless. Keyloggers can get around them by injecting themselves into the filter drivers further up the chain (it's a case of who gets there first), and are most keyloggers are defined as Trojans and picked up by a good Antivirus package anyway.

Also, you are adamant about your security software, yet you've disabled UAC, which prevents any software on your system from having automatic administrative rights without human approval. It seems to be a bit contradictory.

However, if you don't want to do it, then so be it.

/e: I looked up Zemana, and it appears to be a bit more than an Anti Key Logger, however to achieve some of what they claim would require potentially compromising the very security they are supposedly upholding, e.g. SSL Intrusion Protection would require them to act as an SSL proxy, which in turn provides another attack vector. Although I guess it might just be doing something as simple as alerting you if the SSL cert does not match the current domain, or perhaps is not issued from a root authority. It just seems so unnecessary because that is very easy to check yourself, and should be detected far earlier.

Re: Crashing upon launching

I am posting an update.

I unloaded Zemana.
I unloaded Comodo. (however the services Cavwp.exe and Cmdagent.exe) are still loaded and protected, cant stop those.
I unloaded Faststone Capture (although I dont know why that would cause any issues, its just a screen capture software...)
I unloaded Seriousbit NetBalancer (although I dont know why this would cause any issues, all it does is show me what my bandwidth im using is...)

I stopped BitDefender real time scanning and every component it has. Its still running in my taskbar and its still loaded in my process list as well.

I have also rebooted and uninstalled and reinstalled and re-did the wizard yet again using the same method outlined in my OP with the YT video and I am still having the same issue.
Nothing has changed.

This leads me to believe there aren't any programs running that could be interfering. And as I have stated before, (I am an IT administrator also) I have never had a 3rd party program have any conflicts with any software I run on my PC. I have been having the same software environment on my PC for the past few years. Nothing has changed, and ive been able to run every game - and every program ive ran has for the most part ran flawlessly. This is the first program in years that I've had this kind of trouble with.

Why this program would have so many issues with not wanting to play well with other programs is beyond me. I want to use this software and I want to pay to use it, but in this state that's just not gonna happen.

Edit: I am fully aware of what UAC (User Account Control) is and what it does, I got sick and tired of getting a popup window asking me "ARE YOU SURE.....?" whenever i farted.

I will show you whats in my process list as of now. I had to enable faststone to take some screencaps, so ignore that.

Re: Crashing upon launching

You know what? Screw it.

I am not gonna mess with this any more. I feel like I have devoted more than enough time to get this to work. Bob, I appreciate you helping, and I see you have upwards of 1800 posts, so you have probably helped many. Don't think I am being unappreciative because I am not. I appreciate you taking the time out to post, and I apologize if I sounded like a dick in my response. But, if you are an IT admin as you portray you are (...in your 20 some odd years of troubleshooting enterprise systems.) you should know how this usually works. I have kept the same software environment on my PC for years. I know EXACTLY whats supposed to run and whats not. If my PC is acting funny, which it rarely does, I can open my task manager and view the processes and see almost right away if something isn't right. I have YARPV if i want to go more in depth. To me, although this is a trial and I have paid nothing, its a disappointment because the program seems to be a very good idea, but the execution leaves something to be desired. I had to manually go to the Innerspace folder just to delete it. No start menu entry was made or anything. It wasn't even listed in CCleaner... And after practically manually deleting/uninstalling - upon reinstalling the program couldnt find the .XML file. I had to reboot, uninstall and re-reinstall just to get it to make a new XML file. Also, after uninstalling, somehow the footprint to the innerspace executable was still running in my process list.

I applaud the developer for making this software but its got lots of bugs that need to be worked out. I know this software has been out for a few years and I figured it would have come farther than this. Likewise if there were no problems my experience would have been much more positive and I wouldnt even have made this thread. I am going to give up for now and just say fuck it.

My final grade of this software: F
If anyone asks me about it, my reply will be: Good luck getting it to run games on your machine.

Btw, in case anyone is wondering what my PC specs are:

Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge: 3.3ghz/3.3ghz
8gb Ram
AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series.

I've never had any problems running games and I can full well run D3 with 2 instances at the same time manually. So why cant ISBoxer run it?

Re: Crashing upon launching

--> I was writing this up when you posted your other post, figured I'd post anyway. <--

TBH I didn't look at the youtube video. Now that I have, I suggest you use the Skip Launcher profile, rather than the default profile. If you don't have one, you can create one by select the Add Game option from the Inner Space menu, and then entering the path to Diablo III.exe and putting in the parameter "-launch" in the parameters box, w/o the quotes.

If that doesn't work, you may have to actually uninstall Bitdefender and Comodo (for testing purposes) for the reasons in the MS ariticle I linked above, is that even though you have "disabled" it/unloaded, the filter drivers that they install are still in place, and they are still in the path of the I/O system.

The Netbalancer is probably not an issue, but you never know, it is over and above the core windows installation, and it does stuff with your network.
I suggested the Screen Capture software, because some of them are hooking the Windows DWM, which InnerSpace is also doing. I came across one the other day (Greenscreen??) which didn't want to play nice, although it works for some people, so there is probably a combination of factors. It might not be that at all, but it is a

Why wont Inner Space work together with other software?? Well for security software, it is because Inner Space does stuff which the heuristics of the security software doesn't like. What is does is similar to what some not so nice software does. It redirects a number of APIs (directx and some others) in order to be able to do what it does. This might look like keylogging, or process injection or a few other things, which the heuristics of security software is looking for, and even if you set exclusions or disable the security software, because they need to install low level filter drivers to work, and because of where they are installed in the I/O system, the core heuristics cannot be fully disabled, so are still executing, and the prevention mechanisms they implement to try and stop the not so nice software, is still active. Unfortunately there is no way to work around this, other that not to run antithesis software together.
The main other causes of issues are mostly graphics system related because both pieces of software are trying to do redirects/hooks into the D3D libraries, or in some cases the Windows GDI/DWM.
There are a few oddball cases too, like one guy who shutdown Samsung Magician, and it was all good after that, but it hasn't cropped up for others running it. I suspect there was another cause, but that resolved it for him

Yes, it is an XCopy install, and does not load up your registry or other parts of your system with shit. It is effectively a portable install, if you prefer that term. It installs 1 main folder, 2 desktop icons, potentially some DirectX components (which have their own installers and put themselves in your Add/Remove programs list). If it were to load itself in with an uninstall process, then it would add gumpf to your registry, which various install wrappers are known not clear even though you remove the program.
An uninstall program could be written, but it will just be deleting the folder and everything in it, and probably need to put in a bunch of menu icons to support it, and need to setup a bunch of registry entries to delete stuff on reboot, etc. It gets all complicated. I guess I can update the WIKI with some instructions.

Anyway, I see you posted you have decided to not go ahead. I'm sorry it was frustrating for you (and no, I don't think your responses were dickish).
There are many others who have been successful, and some who have accepted the that if they wanted to multibox with Inner Space/ISBoxer, then there may need to be compromises with the brands, types or amount of software they actively run on their computer. In most cases, like yours, this is regardless of the fact they have had no issues with previous software. In some cases, once it has been identified which other piece of software is not allowing it to work, Lax has been able to then determine why the problem is occurring and fix Inner Space so it does work.

Hopefully, in time, the compatibility issues that crop up with various pieces of other software can be resolved, but I'm not holding my breath till it happens. Until then......

... Seems to me any *true* IT professional would have gone through the pains of incompatible software being added to a perfectly fine running system at some point in the last 20 years. I call BS on your "experience" sir.
