WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

I am trying to run five instances of WoW and have done so successfully in the past. Now, after updating to the current ISBoxer/Inner Space, the first one starts successfully. When the second one attempts to start, I get the message "World of Warcraft is unable to start up 3D acceleration". I 'm running dual NVidia 1060/6MB cards, driving 3 monitors. I've cleaned and reinstalled the drivers, using the most current (9/17). I've tried selecting the DX9 64 bit profile. I've recreated the ISboxer configuration from scratch. I can't find anything that works or alters the behavior.

You might try setting the config-charname.wtf file to have the attribute "set gxapi=d3d9"

Tried that. No difference. I can start up five WoW instances without a problem, but I can't do it via ISBoxer.

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

This is usually due to your Window Layout having an invalid monitor handle, which can sometimes be worked around by switching to Direct3D 9 mode.

The fix should actually be to delete and re-create your Window Layout for your team. You can create it using the Window Layout Wizard

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

Thank you, but I already tried recreating the window layout from scratch using the wizard.. no luck. How do you change to Direct3D 9 mode?

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

Normally you would set the graphics option in the in game graphics options, although if you happen to have set your characters in ISBoxer to use a Game Profile which is forcing the graphics option on the command line, then you would need to select the appropriate one.

These are the options that InnerSpace generated for me.
Image

In the Toolkit you will need to check what you are using the Game Profile.

If you are using one of the options which explicitly says DirectX9 or DirectX11, then it is forcing it from the command line. If it does not specifically spell it out, then it should be using whatever the wtf file is telling it to use.

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

Ok, I tried selecting Direct X9 from this menu, but there was no feedback after picking this that InnerSpace was using a different configuration so I had no clue as to what it was or was not doing. I tried setting it to DX9 in the wtf files without luck. I guess my next step is to delete and reinstall inner space and isboxer, as well as delete all the wtf files. Everything used to work without issues, but I did swap out video cards and moved from Windows 8 to WIndows 10. Is there any reason why GeForce 1060s would require DX9 instead of DX11? I'm running Windows 10 64 bit. Is there a known specific configuration I should be shooting for with the 1060s?

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

The feedback that Inner Space is using a different profile is in the Inner Space uplink console (right click the Inner Space icon in the system tray and select Console). The console will show the application that is being launched, along with any parameters, and those parameters will indicate whether dx9 or dx11 is being forced, or not at all.

Swapping out the video cards would require you to generate new Windows Layouts. And when you did this using the Window Layout Wizard, you would need to not select one which has "(existing)" in brackets. To be absolutely sure, you should really delete all your existing Window Layouts and recreate them all (or just create one and assign all teams to it, assuming they are the same size.

Replacing your graphics cards, would cause issues as all the internal designations of devices are likely to have changed, so any reference to an invalid device will potentially cause an issue.
Another problem may be the actual layout where a game instance is starting on one graphics card, and being homed to another screen controlled by a different graphics card ( this is cross monitor swapping - or more aptly cross GPU swapping, where it ends up rendering on one and displaying on the other)

There is no specific reason why you would be required to use dx9 over dx11, other than this 3d acceleration issue pops up most commonly with a dx11 setup, although it does sound like you have multiple GPU's and there is a specific scenario where it pops up with that, and I'm not sure if I've got it right, but I'll have a search and update if I find it.

/edit: after a search, the most promising answers are, recreate your window layouts and remove the problem per character wtf files and let them recreate too.

It might just help to see a compatibility diagnostic.

Re: WoW is unable to start up 3d acceleration

Deleted the Inner Space and Wow WTF folders. Recreated a five man box from scratch... nothing has changed.
