Which CPU for Optimizing ISBoxer in 2017 ?

Trying to decide on a new CPU/Mb/RAM. I'm not up to speed on what's going on with AMD and Intel.

I'm looking to spend around $450 so my choice seems to be between an Intel i7-6700 (4 cores) or an AMD Ryzen 7. I've read Intel is better for gaming and MMOs (I can't back that up) but the AMD has 8 cores against the 4 of the Intel. Will this make a difference running 4 or 5 clients on the one PC ?

(For what it's worth I'm presently 4 boxing FFXIV but also 5 box WoW).

With the current price of DDR4, I don't think you can get all three of those things for $450 unless you go with a Ryzen 7, but you're still going to be cutting it close.

Thanks for replying. $450 is just for the CPU.

Then why settle for a 6700K, which is an older CPU? The 6C/12T 8700K just came out today and, assuming you can find it in stock, is < $400. While you'll likely have to wait for it to come back into stock, it's going to beat both of the CPUs you listed in your first post.

Grab that CPU, get a sexy Z370 motherboard, and then add in, preferably, 32GB of DDR4 (G.Skill is my jam), although some would say that you might be able to get by on 16GB.

Thanks MirAi. The 8700K is $700 here. Maybe it will drop soon.

Rather than specific advice on a particular CPU I was looking for technical advice on whether 6 cores is far superior to 4 when it comes to running 4-5 clients plus browsers etc and whether more cores is more desirable than processing power.

So for example is an AMD Ryzen 8 core CPU preferred to a six core Intel 8700 for boxing while running browsers etc, even though the Intel chip is more powerful ? (apologies for poor wording in OP).

This last 6 months and the next 12 months hold enormous changes for multiboxing CPU wise - after many years Intel are coming around to not sticking with four cores. Affordable 6-8 core CPUs are available now, with 16 cores at the high end of the market.

As the general rule is at least 1 core per game instance then the new cpus from AMD and Intel both fit the bill for the majority of people 5 or 6 boxing.

The other recommendation is to not go below 3GHz for the cores. There were several people using high core count Xeons, clocked at 2.1GHz, and they found that they just weren't fast enough for a single game to play nicely, despite the 20/20 cores.

So, is more cores superior. Sure, but only when the GHz is not being compromised so much that it affects performance.
The new Ryzens and Coffee Lakes both meet both the recommendations in the mainstream desktop range, so you can keep your kidneys.

The other peeps on http://dual-boxing.com who have Ryzens are very happy with them, and they turn out to be not too bad at all.

There are also some real world performance tests for multiboxing on an R7 1700.

All in all, the new competition from AMD and the now catchup from Intel is prompting affording CPU's into the range of more multiboxers, so it is much easier to get an appropriate hardware.

I had originally thought about going the theadripper route.
I box 5 everyday. After a lot of hard thinking I decided to go with the 8700k.
I have an intel system now and I was afraid that if I moved over to AMD I would have to completely redo the drives.
I've had issues going from Intel to AMD before, although that was a few years ago.
My 8700k arrives tomorrow.
Putting this together when it arrives
8700k
ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming K6
Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 Extreme AIO
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000
SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 500GB

System built yesterday and all I can say is wow. (pun intended)
I play at 1920x1080. All toons running at 60 fps , master at level 10 graphics setting the other 4 at level 6.
Feels so much more fluid.
