Upgrade What Next

Hey guys,

Looking to upgrade my computer to better tackle multiboxing a little smoother. CPU has been overheating and burning through arctic silver too fast recently. Day 1 temps are in the mid 40s and day 2 seems to jump to 55+ easily. Crashes on 3rd day ~68C.

Current Specs:

FX-8350 @ 4.3ghz w/ Deep Cool GAMMAX 300 CPU Cooler
MSI 970a-g46 mobo
EVGA Superclocked GTX 770 2GB
16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600
Thermaltake 600w
Samsung 840 120GB(OS) 250GB(Diablo/InnerSpace/Other Games)
1TB HDD (Music/Programs/Misc)
AZZA Gensesis 9000 Full Tower Case

I'm wondering if I should go with the h100i or just save up for Intel really. Everything runs fine aside from the rapidly climbing temps.
AMD FX-8350 ~ H100i ~ Thermaltake TR2 600Watt ~ 4x4 Corsair Vengeance 1600mHz ~ Samsung 120GB OS ~ 250GB Games ~ 1TB WD HDD ~ Azza Genesis 9000w ~ EVGA GTX 770 SC 2GB ~ Windows 7 Home Premium

Re: Upgrade What Next

Well your cooler is not necessarily the most wonderful out there, but should be adequate, however the FX series of chips don't have onchip temp sensors either so the reported values can be interesting. The conjecture out there is that the 4-6 cores tend to start to be wobbly over 65 deg, and the 8 cores over 55 deg.

It is weird that the replacement of thermal compound is good the first day and not so on the later days. It is supposed to be worse on the first day and then slowly settle in over the next few hours (between 60 - 300 or something for AS5). Maybe the heat pipes in your cooler have leaked their fluid?

You could try a H100i, if nothing else you would be able to use it on an upgrade to an Intel CPU later if you need to go down that route. First though I'd make sure there was enough airflow and that the cooler is seating correctly, and not lifting slightly. This may take a magnifying glass and taking the board out to apply the cooler.

Re: Upgrade What Next

You sire have problems with cooling.

I have a AMD FX-8350 (Multiboxing 5 chars on 1 Comp finely [WOW])
The thing is that I recomend the H100 (or H100i if ur using Corsair Kit) or another Dual Radiator Enclosed water cooling kit
they are very easy to setup (in some cases easier than a air cooler) I recomend either a 240mm or 280mm if u can fit it.. (Take the one that fits u, the larger the better [Usually])

I dunno about ur GTX but I think its fine. (I just recently got myself nvidia GTX 970)
so I believe the only cause in ur computer would the COOLING. that you should upgrade.
as previous said. get a new one. preferbly a water cooled one. (enclosed for ease of usage.)

Alrighty thanks for the tips. I'll be looking at the Corsair Liquid Coolers then. :) I can definitely fit a h100i in my case so maybe I will pick one up when they go on sale.

Re: Upgrade What Next

if u have winter mid days sale like we have in sweden (sale starts after christmas days) then its not so far till then :-) we can get some awesome price drops.

H100 & H100i are a bit different, I prefer H100 over H100i due to not owning a Corsair Link Kit. H100i is manageable in OS while H100 u need to press the button on the cooling block manually.

I think the pump is better on H100i while the Fans on H100 are better... or was it vice versa don't know exactly, they arent the exactly the same. but they both offer nice cooling.

Well I went out and got the H100i cooler for a whopping 30 bucks and change at Best Buy. Gonna put it in tomorrow and look at getting some better fans on it. :D
