Want to upgrade for boxing

I've been struggling for a few months now trying to multibox Path of Exile on my laptop that's obviously not equipped to do so. Been running 6 clients at 1024x570 resolution. Had the framerate limited to 6 on 5 of my secondary characters and 20 fps on my main character. Even going into the config.ini file and turning down texture quality to the point where the game looks like claymation and all the spells and animations are just big fuzzy squares, still taxes the hell out of my gpu and my main character's FPS drops regularly to 5 fps or less in the action.

Basically I want a decent desktop that can run 6 PoE clients at 1600x900, maintaining at least 20 fps in the most taxing scenarios on the main character, since I could just limit the framerate to 10 or 15 on the other clients. I'd have settings turned way down on the secondary characters still, but I'd like to be able to play the main one on medium/high settings.

Budget is not really an issue, just want whatever it takes to get the job done. I had thought about going all out and getting gtx titan, but I'm sure that's just really expensive and redundant for what I want.

Probably going to shop at newegg because I have once before and I'm not familiar with anything else. But yea there's just so many choices of parts to get and it really makes it hard for me to settle on something and make a decision. Hoping someone can define things a little more clearly and help me finally make a decision instead of just pondering and procrastinating.

It seems like a no-brainer to get a 6+ core cpu seeing how much I'm running 6 game instances + firefox usually and other small programs. There's still so much I don't understand like why is this cpu:

$450 more than this one?:

Intel processors generally outperform their AMD counterparts by a large margin.
At least for gaming.

Please, save your money. A factory OC'd GTX 780 can easily perform on par with a Titan for $300 less and there's no way you're going to need the 6GB of video RAM that the Titan comes with.

AMD is also releasing their new GPU at the end of the month which is supposed to compete with Titan for a lower price, so it's likely the Titan will drop in price anyway.

Have you ever seen a car with a 6-cylinder motor outperform (have more rear-wheel horsepower) a car with an 8-cylinder motor? That's exactly what you're comparing right there; and one costs more than the other because it performs much better.

Re: Want to upgrade for boxing

So after many hours of reading reviews and doing research, this is what I've come up with:

CPU, $600: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6819116939
GPU, $265: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814130933
MOBO, $240: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6813128532
PSU, $130: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817151132
SSD, $110: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820721107
RAM, $130: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820231568
Case, $55: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811147153

Total cost $1750 after taxes/shipping.

I tried to pick good quality reputable manufacturers. Think anything in this build is overkill? I think everything is reasonable, but I'd like to know if/where I can save money. Any obvious compatability issues?. I read a lot of reviews about how shit gets delivered and its just fucked from the start or blows up a few months in, even with the best brands. Hopefully that doesn't happen as I really want to get this up and running for the official release of Path of Exile 6 days from now.

Re: Want to upgrade for boxing

This MB is the same product line, but goes to 64GB and it's $15 cheaper.

For $35 more you can get a 4GB GPU from the same product line.

For $45 you can get a Storm Scout 2 case. This case is hands down the ... best ... case I've ever had the opportunity to own. After I got the first one, I bought two more to replace the cases on two other computers.

I just bought all this stuff within the last 3 weeks and am very pleased with all of it.

Hmm that MB is actually $20 more on the canadian site right now. I never really use more than my current 16GB when 6-boxing + other programs, and I don't know what else eats up a lot of RAM other than gaming. I might still go with that one, $20 is a drop in the bucket at that point.

What might I need 2GB more VRAM for if I were to go with that model? (sincere question)

Can't really decide if the case is worth the extra money, doesnt' seem like it is for me personally.

Re: Want to upgrade for boxing

Going $100 (or $80) isn't really that much of a difference when you're talking $1700 anyway.
And if it's going to result in a much better product that you'll enjoy for several years, before upgrading again...

My system is effectively a generation older.
I have the 6-core 3930K, with a slight overclock.
I went with 32GB of Ram, with the option to upgrade to 64GB; the reason for additional Ram would be the possibility of using a RamDrive (DimmDrive is a cheap software that lets you make a RamDrive quickly and easily).
I went with a GTX 670, 4GB; your card is again a generation later... but I don't regret the 4GB card over the 2GB. Mine is a great card, and that was definitely worthwhile.

I don't think Path of Exile (6-box) is going to push your system.
But that's not saying you cannot or will not want to play other games down the road.
Boxing does push a system far beyond single-box play.
I was planning on upgrading my system in 2015 or 2016 (built in 2012, and likely will last me several years, as your system will serve you).

I didn't realize that they made X79 boards with support for only 32GB of RAM since one of its large selling points was the fact that it was capable of supporting 64GB of RAM.

Even if you never plan to use 64GB, having a board that supports it will probably help add some value to the system if you ever need/want to sell it.

I don't know how much VRAM PoE uses, but it's becoming easier to hit 2GB of VRAM these days depending on your video settings. If anything, it helps with resale value. ;)

Cases are completely subjective. Just as long as you know there's enough space in there for you to put everything, then you should be good to go.

No clickbank link.
I'm not selling anything.

I was given a free copy of DimmDrive to play around with.
It is extremely easy to use, and is basically a Ram Drive... which is the largest reason I can think of for going with a larger quantity of Ram.
There are other software options for Ram Drives, but DD is very easy to use.

Re: Want to upgrade for boxing

So I ended up ordering all of it with firescue17's suggestions. Total came to like $1900..fuck it, I'm sure I'll be happy with everything haha. Hopefully nothing is defective. Seems like there's a lot of reviews on newegg saying "my shit was DOA", at least a lot more than I would expect from top tier cutting edge multinational corporations and all.

Much appreciation for the help, thanks =D
