i5 vs i7

Hi.

I'm building a new rig for diablo 3 multiboxing (4x).

Is there any difference in performance for i5 and i7 when running 4x diablo? Normally i7 doesn't perform better than i5 in games, but I'm not sure if that's the case when multiboxing.

More often than not, Hyper-Threading is beneficial when multiboxing.

Re: i5 vs i7

I moved your post to the Multiboxing Hardware section since it's not really a Diablo 3 question so much as a hardware question :)

The answer is yes. Yes, yes, yes. There is a massive difference between a non-hyperthreaded quad core CPU, and a hyperthreaded quad core CPU, for any multitasking and especially multiboxing. i7 will outperform an i5 when multiboxing any day.

Throwing additional CPU cores at a random application (including most games) is not usually going to drastically improve the performance of that one application (so typical benchmarks may not show a major benefit). This is mostly due to the application design not taking full advantage of (or perhaps even needing) extra cores.

However, the more applications you throw at it (e.g. game instances) the more useful those cores become. Granted, these are not extra physical cores we're talking about, and they do not perform 100% of the tasks a physical core can handle. But they do handle enough to make a significant impact in multitasking.

Re: i5 vs i7

the 3930k / 3960k is amazing. a-m-a-z-i-n-g. $$ though.

On a budget, I would buy the fx-8530 in a heart beat.
