I'd try to pick a key for your assist and follow, which is not used elsewhere.

As far as FTL goes, if everyone has a unique modifier, you don't need any of the FTL specific keys to be keybound.
It might be useful to keybind "FTL Assist Me" anyway, as your assist key.

But as far as FTL goes...
The FTL DPS keys (mapped keys) call an FTL function (the FTL Assist Me mapped key, in general keymaps) and then send the pressed key to all windows.
Whether there is a hotkey or not, another key can do a "Do Mapped Key" function.
